What Is Standing Seam Metal Roofing?

Standing seam metal roofing is defined as a concealed fastener metal panel system that features vertical legs and a broad, flat area between the two legs. It’s also described as having raised seams, or vertical legs, that rise above the panel’s flat area. Standing seam systems can be used for either metal roofing or metal walls.

The main idea for standing seam systems is that the fastener is hidden, whether the panel is attached to the roof deck using a clip or is directly fastened to the decking material under the vertical leg (fastener flange).

Waviness in the panel referred to as “oil canning” may occur and is inherent to this type of panel and is not a cause for rejection. Narrow widths, striations, lighter colors, and heavier gauges minimize “oil canning”.

Standing Seam Profile Types

Standing seam metal roofs offer a wide range of options including: color, width, height, profile, thickness, etc.  When choosing a panel, it is important to identify the profile most suitable for the project.

RM Metal Roofing Supply offers the following varieties of Standing Seam Profiles:

Fastener flange, snaplock, single-lock, and double-lock mechanical seam.

Sanding Seam metal roofs

Snap-Lock Profiles:

*RM 175, Berridge Cee-Lock

Snap-lock profiles have panels with edges that snap together without needing hand or mechanical seaming. They attach to the roof deck with clips that fasten beneath the panel. Unlike fastener flange panels, true snap-locks allow the system to float freely.

Mechanically Seamed Profiles:

*RM 200 (Single and Double-Lock), Berridge Zee Lock (Single and Double Lock)

Mechanically seamed panels have edges that align and are locked together by bending the edges with a hand or mechanical seamer. There are two types: Single lock (90-degree seams) and double lock (180-degree seams).

Nail Flange, Nail Strip or Fastener Flange Profiles

*RM 100

Nail flange profiles are similar to snap-lock systems but are directly fastened to the roof deck through the male leg of the panel. The female leg snaps over the male leg, hiding the fastener head.
